The challenge
A client's first aid course was built before current accessibility standards. Like many older courses, it had missing alt text, uncaptioned media, low-contrast text, and interactions that only worked with a mouse.
My role
Audited the course, prioritized the fixes, and rebuilt it.
Process
- Audit: checked the module against WCAG 2.2 AA using Storyline's accessibility features, WebAIM Contrast Checker, and AccessibilityChecker.org.
- Prioritize: fixed blockers first (no keyboard access, no captions), then contrast and structure.
- Rebuild: remediated in Storyline and documented each change.
- Retest: repeated the keyboard and screen-reader pass.
What changed
- Captions and transcripts for all audio and video
- Descriptive alt text; decorative images marked as decorative
- Text and buttons raised to at least 4.5:1 contrast
- Text and visual colors changed to pass color contrast standards
- Logical focus order and visible focus on every control
- Drag-and-drop replaced with a keyboard-friendly alternative
Results
All issues found in the audit were fixed. The updated course meets accessibility standards and met the client's expectations.
